Don’t think you can afford a doula? Think again!

pregnancy moms coral springsA doula is a woman highly skilled and educated in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. A doula spends years increasing her knowledge of childbirth by attending classes, births, continuing educating courses and networking with other birth professionals. For all of these reasons and more, a doula is not free and can be very expensive (but absolutely worth it). There are many ways an expectant couple to afford a doula for their pregnancy and childbirth if they budget for it. Here are some ways:

  1. Hire early and stretch out payments. Paying for a doula over 8 months is a lot easier than paying over 2 months. Whether you pay the doula directly or just put away the money each month to pay her at once, it’s helpful. Consider asking the doula for a payment plan.
  2. Buy used and put away the difference in your doula fund. Instead of spending $200 on a stroller, buy a used one for $100 and add the additional $100 to your doula fund. Do the same with your crib, highchair, bouncy seat and swing too. You can easily save 50% on these items by buying used. Even better, take hand me downs from friends and family or borrow certain items.
  3. Add a doula to your baby registry. Instead of clothes, a diaper Jeanie, wipes warmer and toys, ask friends and family to contribute to your doula fund. If 20 people give at least $30, you’re more half way to paying for your doula.
  4. Skip your date night once a month during your pregnancy. Opt for dinner at home and some TV instead of dinner and a movie out. You will easily save $50 a month. Do this each month and you’re more than ½ way to paying for your doula.
  5. Bring lunch to work. Going out to lunch, even to a fast food restaurant, will cost $10 a day. Pack a lunch and you’ll save $50 a week. Do this each week and you’ll have enough for a doula AND a week of postpartum doula services after the baby arrives.

Doing one or all of these will enable you to afford a doula and other extras during your pregnancy, such as childbirth classes, placenta encapsulation, and postpartum doula services.  If you are in the Coral Springs, Parkland or surrounding areas in South Florida and looking for a doula, please contact me for a free consultation.
